Lipstick and hygiene. When to know when it’s expired…

Lip products need to be kept hygienic. Once your tube of lipstick starts to smell bad, it’s an indication of lipstick mold meaning it’s past its prime and should be tossed out. Remember that when your lipstick starts to have an unusual smell or changes color, or texture, this is, unfortunately, a sign that the shelf life has expired.

However, if you still continue to use expired lipstick products then it can cause side effects or major skin issues such as making your lips darker over time. Expired lipstick also makes your lips dry and chapped. I’ve seen this with clients over and over again.

When you accidentally sneeze while applying your lipstick or gloss this might seem innocent, but if you sneeze around your make-up while applying, you’re immediately putting bacteria into any open container. Bacteria can live on the surface of your lipstick, or inside the tube of lip gloss, which will eventually be spread onto your lips in the next application.

Take a tube of lipstick and dip it in alcohol for 15 to 30 seconds, then wipe away the top layer of the lipstick. Or, leave it overnight in the freezer as this will help to kill bacteria.

When does lipstick and lipgloss actually expire? Lipstick can last between 12 – 18 months. Lipstick and gloss are packed with preservatives such as parabens, essential oils and vitamins to help ward off germs but these really start to break down after a year maximum.

You may thank me later. <3
