It’s not always easy to find the right make-up shade for woman of color especially when most beauty industries are geared up towards fair skinned costumers. I stumbled on Ofunne Amaka website when browsing for darker toned skin looks.
Ofunne graduated from the Communications Practice Masters program at Columbia University in December. In her spare time she ran a personal fashion/lifestyle blog along with Cocoa Swatches. She developed Cocoa Swatches after becoming frustrated with the lack of diversity in beauty products for women with darker complexions.
Cocoa swatches is an app for darker toned skin where you can access the latest make-up swatches on various skin tones. Fueled by a Nigerian heritage simultaneously intertwined with her experience Ofunne utilizes her expertise in the field of communications to promote and uplift the images of women of color in the media through fashion and beauty.
She decided to create a space where women of colour could share tips and tutorials, and lift the lid on what products work for which skin tones. The result is a community of women committed to spreading the love on the products that are actually catering to a diverse audience, and promoting the message that there’s no such thing as one-shade-suits-all.
